Working Together Components
The Working Together project has 6 components Merchant Organizing, District Marketing, Placemaking, Cleaning and Beautification, Business Support and Retention, Coordination.
Without hesitation, this is the most important of the components managed by Working Together, as it pursues the independence of local merchants from Working Together, and support their efforts towards economic development by themselves. Until 2017, the Corridors had zero interrelation among merchants.
This component is fundamental for the general objective of Working Together, as there is a strong need to work on the image and public perception of our District, fighting back a common stigma of it being dangerous and unwelcoming.
Side by side with District Marketing, Placemaking is essential for sustainable economic development. In 2018, Placemaking activities were a split responsibility, between the BDC and a local CBO: Uptown Grand Central-UGC (as Partner).
Cleaning & Beautification
The CDNA provided a good understanding on the need to have clean/neat Commercial Corridors (most commercially-active areas of the District). That, with the objective of enticing visitors to browse the Area on a regular basis.
Business Support & Retention
As of December 2017, 53% of surveyed merchants did not feel prepared to efficiently manage their businesses (due to below-par management skills). 73% of them, had received fines from the City, due to below-par management.
