Position Summary:

The Director of Grants and Contracts leads the institutional funding efforts of Union Settlement.  This position is responsible for researching, identifying and preparing responses to city, state and federal requests for proposals (RFPs), and supervising two grant writers as they prepare proposals and grant reports for foundation and corporate support, and research foundations and other potential funding opportunities.  She or he will work closely with the Director of Development & Communications to assist on individual giving, events, agency marketing and media relations efforts, as needed.  The Director will work closely with the development team, as well as program staff, to raise the private funding necessary to maintain essential community services and invest in new programming, and to raise the profile and tell the story of Union Settlement’s successes.  This is an opportunity for a creative individual to join an effective and ambitious six-member development team.

 

Responsibilities:

●      Analyze RFPs and grant announcements, and write, edit, and lead an agency-wide team of programmatic, fiscal, and administrative staff to produce compelling proposals for government contracts and private funding sources.

●      Supervise two grant writers in preparing proposals, reports, acknowledgments, and budgets for foundations, corporations and religious organizations.

●      Conduct prospect research to find funding opportunities.

●      Maintain a calendar to track grant application and reporting deadlines, proposal acceptances and rejections, next steps, funding history, meeting notes, etc.

●      Special projects and duties as assigned, including assistance with fundraising events.

 

Qualifications:

●      Bachelor’s Degree in related field; Master’s Degree in related field a plus.

●      Five plus years’ experience in development/proposal writing in social services or related field, including three years of working on government RFP responses.

●      Outstanding writing and editing skills; substantial experience with grant writing and government RFPs, including winning proposals, and the ability to persuasively convey program results through proposals, reports and donor communications.

●      The ability to lead a cross-disciplinary team through a complicated RFP preparation process.

●      Familiarity with social service programs and a strong desire to help improve the lives of the residents in East Harlem.

●      Skilled at project management and ability to work on multiple grants at any given time.

●      Excellent organizational ability and interpersonal skills.

●      Overall flexibility and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

●      A dedicated work ethic, diligence, and readiness to be a hands-on team member with a keen eye for detail.

●      Excellent computer skills; Google Suite, Microsoft Word and Excel experience essential. Knowledge of html, graphic design, and/or Salesforce, or other donor databases preferred.
