Interns of the Working Apprenticeship Through Estuarine Research for Students (WATERS) program will select an estuarine topic to study. Participants will gain real-world science experience by creating a study design, collecting, and analyzing data, and sharing the results of their research. WATERS participants will work with guidance from RIPA researchers and Hudson River Estuary Program staff and network with professors and professionals in various fields of ecology to gain exposure to different STEM and STEM-adjacent career paths. Interns will also receive professional development support, including resume writing, cover letter development, and professional statements. Interns will report to the P.A.L Coordinator and Director of Environmental Programming.
This is a three-year apprenticeship, and the expectation is that apprentices will be committed for the full duration and complete all three years. Apprentices will be required to work on site during the summer with flexible remote work during the school year.
Funding for this program is provided by the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program.
Design, conduct, analyze, and report on an estuarine-focused field experiment or study in conjunction with other apprentices
Responsible for leading/mentoring younger interns and apprentices
Coordinate with the Park-as-Lab Coordinator and Director of Environmental Programming every morning to determine daily activities
Other general tasks, as assigned

Enrolled in college (sophomore standing or higher)
Some background in oceanography, marine biology, limnology, ecology, environmental sciences, natural resources, and/or similar fields
Excellent organization skills and strong attention to detail
Strong interest in science, natural resources, environmental justice, and research techniques
Motivated and punctual, able to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to collaborate and create positive working relationships
Willing to work in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions (rocky shorelines, hot and/or humid weather, mosquitos, bees, pollen)
Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination
Please have at least one reference available, upon request
Knowledge of computers basics (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook)
