About

Matthew Westerby Company presents The Harlem Project, a dance project bringing together
professional and community performers of all ages. Now in its fourth year, the project was
inspired by themes of renewal, regeneration and community building. During the summer
months choreographer Matthew Westerby works with his own professional dancers to create
the original dance work, as well as rehearsing with youth participants from the Dunlevy-
Milbank Center of the Children’s Aid Society (Harlem), Covenant Ballet Theatre (Brooklyn),
Ballet & Beyond NYC (Upper West Side) and SCAN NY (The Bronx). For this project, Westerby
also created an apprentice ensemble to provide performance opportunities for college and high
school age dancers. Visual artist Marc Boone has also created the set design for the
performance inspired by the movement patterns of the piece.

The finished work will bring together the cast of over 70 performers on the Amphitheater stage
in Marcus Garvey Park on Tuesday August 13th, at 5.30 PM. The performance is free and open
to the general public. There is also a free pre-show Family Zumba workshop, led by local Zumba
instructor Leo Zumba, live DJ music and art-making activities for children.

The professional dancers from the project will also perform in preview Pop-Up performances
around the neighborhood – follow project updates at
