East Harlem DRI

Today, East 116th Street needs significant improvement, with many businesses lacking the individual resources to improve their existing façades and entryways. Storefronts are often in poor condition, have inadequate signage and lighting, and lack modern retail amenities. Some of the local businesses have shared a desire to work together and improve their neighborhood, but funding is a significant barrier.

The East 116th Street Storefront Revitalization project, led by Union Settlement and funded by a $1 million New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant, will create an attractive and welcoming commercial corridor that increases patronage at local businesses and serves the local East Harlem community.

The project will provide grants to selected businesses to facilitate the design and implementation of facade and entryway improvements along East 116th Street, generally between Park Avenue and Pleasant Avenue. Improvements may include new signage, awnings, exterior lighting, painting, window and door replacements, and exterior seating.

Participating businesses and property owners will:

• cover 10% of the cost of all improvements related to their individual storefront;
• participate in the creation of the design; and
• collaborate in the implementation of the improvements.

These enhancements will create a cohesive feel along the East 116th Street Corridor and enhance its appeal as a local shopping destination, generating further local investment in the community.
